Composting Yew
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:39 »
I have a big Yew tree in the front of the house and as it was Takeing a lot of light from the house I decided to thin it out a bit(wife told me to really).I got a lot of usefull bits that i'll be able to use as supports but i'm a bit worried about composting such a large amount of yew needles/leaves/whatever you call them as I know they are highly toxic.

I'm worried they'll kill off worms etc in the compost heap. Can I compost them?

A good composting link here ("composting poisonous plants", near the bottom.)

(Basically, the toxins are broken down by proper composting!)  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

You could always try selling the clippings to a drugs company to turn into Tamoxifen!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/3315898/Strapped-for-cash.html

"Diana Howlett, from Limehurst, the company that collects yew clippings, informed me that it pays 20p per kilo for harvests of between 100 and 499 kilos, and that 100 kilos was about the minimum amount it would collect, unless I lived near to their headquarters in Chichester."
