Nest box

DH has decided that the chooks need a nest box on the side of the coup. This is along with adding yet more run to the 12x3ft we have currently!

Anyway has anyone got any plans or schematics that they know of which will help in his design process? He has vague idea, but personally I think he needs some help. It will be attached to the outside of the already built from tongue and grove coup. It will have a sloping lid which has to easy access.

Also what size per bird and how many?

We have 4 chooks in a house that is fit for 6 chickens. We aren't getting more at the moment, but we may plan to get 2 more birds. I'd like to plan for that eventuality.

the current nesting area is inside the main coup 4ft by 3ft.

I think this is my DH way of trying to encourage the chooks to lay.

You could try here, ready made nestboxes, just stick it on the outside!

I have passed it on and DH says it will work out cheaper by time he's made it and gone to buy wood as our nearest supplier is 30 minutes drive away! Would you believe that in the SE UK, but tis true!

Ive just converted a £14:99 storage box and mine love it
£15 might sound alot to you guys but I could get it in my car (no massive delivery truck stuck in single track road, even getting wood here is a problem!) And I felt jolly satisfied with myself when I'd done it

You need to be cutting your own planks from your trees Vember.

That would be the ultimate self-sufficiency

That'd be great do you need any heavy machinery to do that ca'use sounds alot of hard work :?
I'd never get time to enjoy my birds

Besides the trees were only planted 20 years ago they're not big enough yet,

P'raps wait another 10 years or so then and save up for a chainsaw and a sawbench.

I could spend my days playing with wood. Cutting, nailing one bit to another, sawing bits off. Could even make something useful :roll:
