Does anyone know if you need planning permission to put a large greenhouse and or polytunnel on agricultural land? I'm not sure if it is registered as a holding with DEFRA yet.

You'd best check with the local authority John. Supposedly greenhouses and polytunnels do not need PP as they are temporary structures, but we have read stories of people being made to take theirs down because they don't blend in with the landscape!
A few years back they were talking about needing PP on them, but don't think anything actually came of it officially.
But come on, what a load of tosh! It's agricultural!

Hi John... maybe this will help... :)

We are in the same position at the moment - the registration as a smallholding is attahched to the name - not the plot - where we are moving it has been registered for 10 years - but when we finally move in we will have to re-register (well only when we get livestock)
As to polytunnels - its a mixed message - ask the local planners nicely and you may get the answer you want!!

It seems I'm going to have to spend some time being nice to planning people - everything I look at says the rules are different in Wales but doesn't say what they are!

It is a mysterious country

Just keep mentioning medwyn and I'm sure you'll be fine ;)

You may have to ask the Welsh authorities about the rule and then wait for them to write it!

I would go to their office, you get more sense that way and you don't have to wait weeks for a reply to a letter. If they have you in front of them they have to speak to you :)
I know from experience :D
