Hiya

We are SO late this year, do you reckon it's too late to sow Dwarf French Beans, Peas and Runner Beans?

Is it too late to sow onion sets?

We've got garlic bulbs too so we're going to plant them this week too.

Anything else that's good to go in the ground now?

All advice will really be appreciated!  :)

Thanks
Herbie

Way too late for onion sets...  perhaps you might end up with something useable as a large spring onion?

Too early for sowing garlic - You need to wait until mid September at least?

Dwarf french bean will be OK as will runner beans I think!

I put in a late bed of pea seeds at the weekend to replace the ones that had finished

Agree with the others.

There have also been lots of similar threads recently - might be worth browsing them for further suggestions made there, and the Month by Month link under the main banner too.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I am beginning to think that that the old school of thought is outdated.
Do we really have four seasons?
Who remembers the days when the lawn would have its last cut and the lamwnmower put away for the whole of winter?
We are actually one third in the season of summer!! Shirt sleeve order for those who know what I am talking about.
The point is that things are changing, Autumn is extending and sometimes becomes early spring.
If you have got space  then use it and I would suggest keep notes for future reference.

You can plant Japanese onion sets (overwinters) but in my experience I have never known them work.  They bolt badly for me.  Others may have had better luck!

You can sow french beans now - if not for much of a harvest then for a green manure for the root benefits.  The reason I say this is they they will possibly develop powdery mildew.

Early varieties of peas can also go in, but there is a large chance of powdery mildew again so dont rely on too much of a crop. Ive got some in though  :)

Garlic is better planted in nov - possible the last planting of the year! (For me anyway!)

latest (dwarf) bean sowings 10 days ago are about 3-4" tall, so I personally am optimistic of getting another crop :)

I also sowed some late peas last year, which weren't very prolific to be honest, but did give us maybe 30-40 pods off about 8 plants (for basically no effort)

It's worth trying early varieties of most things if you have some spare seeds - early just means they mature quickly. Be prepared for mixed success but if you've spare ground and some spare seed, why not?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Last year our japanese onions went in mid October and we had a huge crop in May --- together with shallots and garlic  :D

You can sow spinach now, khol rabi, turnips, coriander, fenugreek, florence fennel, overwintering carrots (cover them against carrot fly still ) and mustard greens, as well as spring cabbage from seed.

There are kale plants, PSB etc available too, so plenty to keep you busy  :D
