Asparagus (plants not bare root crowns)???
« on: July 19, 2008, 23:28 »
I might buy some of this:LINK
but I'm wondering what 'Supplied as compost block grown plants (not bare root crowns).' means? Does it matter? Are crowns better?

Can anyone help me?

thanks  :?

Seedlings, fine. Only difference you get both male and female plants, but then you sometimes still do, when they promise all male crowns.

And seedlings might be easier to keep growing for people with little or no luck getting crowns to stay alive. Crowns tend to be a much larger root that needs to be properly set into the ground for success. Few people are willing to go to that much bother.

Thanks Trillium  :)

Please excuse my ignorance but what is wrong with having female asparagus plants? Do they not make spears?

Cheers

They all make spears, just that female plants put out seeds which can start plants everywhere on you. I have a lot of female plants but little luck on the extra plants    I suspect hungry winter critters eat the seeds before they sprout.
