Fennel Roots
« on: July 21, 2008, 01:39 »
Hi

Does anyone know if the root of a florence fennel can be used? I don't mean the green shoots or the leafage but the khaki/brown root bit that hides about 4 or 5 inches underground. Doesn't matter if it can't but as its chunky would be good if it had a bit of a life!

Thanks in advance

You'll find people eat all sorts of things. Don't know what it's like but is edible and used by some.

:D  my step dad would tho...... he never has a clue what he's eaten.  the diabetes affects his taste buds so he can't really identify flavours.

if you gave him something and asked him what it is, he probably couldn't tell you.

for example sweet potato and butternut squash.

he would know its fennel but due to his lack of culinary and gardening knowledge i could probably tell him that everybody eats the root and he'd believe me!

I have a fennel plant which has bolted and it doesn't seem to have a useable base size so I'm letting it go to seed (for next year).
