What fertilizer to use
« on: January 29, 2018, 16:31 »
A fantastic time of the year I'm wondering what to fertilize my polytunnels with this year I grow mostly tomatoes and an odd chilli,  I have 3 choices.  The council has started to make compost it's all the bin rubbish compacted and composted , or the farmers usual cow dung with straw through it , or the easy option a couple of bags of fish blood and bone  I have 3 big tunnels 16 ft by 42 ft , so what do you think would be best boy's the council compost is free so is the farmers dung just the hassle of going and lifting it thanks guy's Ricky.

Yes, I'd be interested too. I only have the one polytunnel and I usually spread old horse-muck in winter and then dig it in. I then augment this with Growmore but am wondering if there's a better solution?

Cow/horse manure or council compost will be better for soil structure and long term fertility.
Just be careful about council compost as it can be of very variable quality with all sorts of unknown things in there, herbicide treated lawn mowings, weed roots etc.
You can always top up the nutrient level with BFB or low nitrogen fertilizer as required.

For my chillies....
Mix general compost with both perlite and vermiculite, add to this Fish Blood n Bone, I will then feed them Maxicrop liquid food until flowers then switch to a tommy food.

For the toms I just dig a big hole, throw in some rotted manure and back fill then plant the toms, again fed with maxicrrop until fruit then tommy food.

As others have indicated, compost and manure are not fertilisers; they are soil improvers.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

John has explained the nutritional values of manure here
NPK Nutritional Values of Animal Manures & Compost Etc.
To keep with the organic benefit of using manure, I'd add Fish, Blood and Bone fertiliser for any extra feeding.
