Herbicide in Horse Manure
« on: July 14, 2020, 21:04 »
Im hoping to get some help. I am very new to vegetable gardening. Ive always enjoyed flowers. But this year I really wanted to try veggies. My husband and I built two raised beds 4' x 8' each and purchased 6 cubic yards of local aged horse manure. All was fine. I planted cherry tomatoes, bush beans, squash, bell peppers, cucumbers. It's not two months and although the cherry tomatoes have yeilded quite a crop. All the leaves of the tomatoes and bush beans look curly, deformed and the leaves of the beans are cuped. I did some research and Im finding that the manure may be contaminated with herbicide. I am so frustrated and devasted as I spent a bit of money in order to have a garden. Im terrified to eat anything. Although the only thing that produced anythig was the cherry tomatoes and a few pickling cucumbers.
Below is my cherry tomatoe plants. Ill try to upload some of the beans.

Are you growing the tomatoes inside a greenhouse or outside?

Are most of the leaves affected, or just a few (I can't tell from the middle photo)?  And if not all of them, where are the affected leaves on the plant?

I'm surprised that the cherry tomatoes were unaffected if they were grown in the same manure as the other plants.

What I'm trying to explore is the likelihood of this not actually being herbicide damage, but a more physical impact from, for example, extreme temperatures.  I see you're in the US, so we're not familiar with the temperatures you've been getting but it is possible, particularly but not exclusively if you're growing in a greenhouse.

Have you asked the source of the manure whether the animals ate treated grass, or their straw came from treated grass?  This will be the only way to know for sure.

Even if it is the herbicide, the RHS and HSE say that the produce is safe to eat:

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Whereabouts in Tennessee are you? Your growing zone ranges from 5a to 8a if I remember right across the state? We're roughly between 8 and 10 here so it could be hard for us to advise you correctly if it's not caused by contaminated manure, though we will still try!
