Title: Japanese onion sets
Post by: captainhastings on October 11, 2013, 18:13
Going to plant a 100 sets tomorrow is it recommended to protect them with netting or would I be ok ?
I did sow some seeds direct about a month ago but they have not surfaced so I assume they were grazed off by the slugs so I may turn that bit of ground over and use for my sets

I put fleece over mine just to stop the birds from pulling them out, and it seems to work.
But if I don't fleece them I just go round and push them back again if they have been pulled out.

Netting for us but well off the ground and secured to the ground with tent pegs. Our first effort of fleece draped over resulted in the sets being disturbed by mice we think. We found them piled up in little heaps! Weird! Hubby did not like having to replant them.

I put Enviromesh on mine just to keep the birds and rabbits off

The moles can play havoc with them though and you find onion sets all over the place, yards from where you planted them  :nowink:  I once tried to do a pattern with three lots of coloured onions - the browns, whites and reds. The mole got under them and it was a right mess. I'll never try that again
