Preparing for freedom!
« on: May 18, 2007, 18:15 »
After 2 weeks in the run my 2 chooks are going out in the garden tomorrow :!:  They are desperate to get out there; all that green growth to devour and soil to cultivate.  The garden is secure but only has a 3.5-4ft fence on one side. I'm going to fence off the most precious plants so I don't go
All I have to do first is clip their wings......do we have an emoticon for "OH MY GOD!"  I've seen the wing clipping diagram and have hubby to help so what can possibly go wrong :?:  :!:
Anything I should be prepared for?

It really is easy to do.  You just need a descent pair of scissors and hubby.

Hold chook under your arm, I prefer to hold them with their head facing forwards.  If you take a firm grip on the front joint of the outer wing it is quite easy to hold the wing open and still.

Cut the primaries, there is usually 8-10 of them back to about 1-2 inches long.  You will probably be able to see the veins in the quill end of the feather,  make sure not to cut  these.

Easy peasy   :D

All went smoothly with the wing clipping. I held them while hubby chopped.C hooks had a lovely time scratching around the garden for a good hour.  Lovely watching them. They were not impressed when I had to shut them up in their run while I went out! Turned their noses up at the lettuce used to entice them back in!

Hi there! I have also had to clip my chooks wings - after so many "Great Escapes" they were flying left right and centre and when I did eventually do the deed they screamed blue murder!! Good advice from Aunt Sal re: chooks head under your arm.....bit late now
