Comfrey - uses?
« on: April 10, 2012, 21:05 »
While out for a jog this morning I went through an area that used to be allotments. I think the plots have been relocated but there is loads of comfrey popping up from where people used to have their own supply. It is now a patch of rough ground open to the public.
I currently have around 6 plants of my own that I use to make comfrey tea but this morning I took 6 carrier bags full of the stuff from the area I mentioned and did not even make a dent in what was there.

Other than comfrey tea what else could I be using it for?

Is that tea for you to drink? I thought comfrey was a bit toxic?

I know you can make an organic plant feed from it - I think it might officially be disallowed by the powers that be re: recommending it, but the plants love it!

I always try to put a layer of wilted comfrey leaves in the trench under my seed potatoes when I plant them.
I find I get a better and healthier crop.

If I have excess it works as a great activator in the compost heap.
But this year my patch is late coming along so I may have to plant the spuds without.

i usually add the leaves to the compost bin as its supposed to speed the process up. DBG why would the mods have anything against you recommending comfry - its a plant. they only dis-allow you promoting your own company.

What comfrey is it?  You get white and red varieties.

You can eat the white comfrey, and its stunningly good.  Am I going to open the (toxic) flood gates by saying that?

not the moderators here.
You know the banned chemicals think a few years ago - well not long after that I read something about not banning comfrey based plant feeds but it might have been the old EU suggesting it shouldn't be advised - I can't remember the details now but I ignored it anyway!!

Hi Emma - comfrey or nettle tea is basically a pile of leaves added to water and left to make a feed liquid called Tea... this is diluted and watered onto plants.. See the info on comfrey on the Growing help tab on the top of the page... here is a direct link.. http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/comfrey/index.php

Home made feeds are fine, home made pesticides are definately not allowed to be debated and promoted unless they have EU approval.  We can do what we like in the privacy of our homes, but not on a public forum. ;)

I meant in the sense of making a feed from it for my spuds -not to drink.

From the comments here I should start putting it in with my compost heap as well.
