Title: you'll never guess what we did last night!

Hubby was coming home after taking his Mum back who had been for Sunday lunch. We'd killed and prepared one of our own meat birds which we had with home grown veg.  Thought that was it for the day, sat with my feet up and a glass of wine.  DH got back and shouted me to the back door, there was a dead Roe deer on the drive!

On the way to his Mum's he'd spotted it dead at the side of the road and as it was still there on the way back he stopped and threw it in the boot, like you do.

It was just warm so hadn't been dead long but had obviously been hit by a car.  Poor thing , a young buck, about a year old.  If it had been savea-ble we would have taken it to a vet, we love animals, but hopefully, it didn't suffer and now we had to decide what to do.

Venison ideally should be hung, but as this wasn't an option, what with the weather being a bit too warm, we turned to the internet.  After watching a few you tube videos we sharpened the knives and hoisted it up in the out-house.

An hour later it was skinned, gutted and jointed.  It is now in the freezer! 
A real shame such a beautiful young animal had to die this way but at least it wasn't left to rot at the side of a dark country lane, we have made good use of it and will get at least 7 or 8 meals out of it.

What a night!

hubby has a bad habit of bringing home road kill!
We have had rabbit pie for Sunday lunch before now that he's picked up from outside the house!  Luckily it had no tyre marks on it and hadn't been picked over by the magpies  :tongue2:
