What is wrong with my carrots?
« on: June 26, 2008, 11:16 »
I've noticed some of my carrots falling over in the last few days so took a couple out this morning and thought that the roots have been eaten.  I've attached some pics.  Any help would be much appreciated.

That's not carrot root fly, not sure what it is, but way bigger.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Are the carrots planted in new land? i.e. uncultivated for a while? If so your problem could be wireworm.....these are the larvae of the clickbeetle and uncultivated land is normally swarming with them:( The thing is, it takes 3 - 4 years for them to mature into adults. Fingers crossed it might not be them.

There has been vegetables or flowers in this bed for as far as I can remember so it isn't new.

Any nuclear plants near by? Has the signs of CRF but they do look big.

Sorry, I can't make much out of the photos, what are we looking at, the little black things or mud or the little white things next to the carrot? :?

Can someone clever zoom in on what we supposed to be looking at?

They defo have nematodes though, I'd say.

I'm not clever, but this is the little creature that I found in most of the carrots.

What's the size? Carrot root fly larvae is thread thickness, just about well can be seen.

You could spot these ok.  Slightly longer than 1 cm and about 1 mm wide.

By size then, they could well be carrot root fly. They don't look like that though by colour and ribbing, but photos can be deceptive. They are much longer than thick and photo says otherwise, have a google at carrot weevil, not much common in the UK though and if still not happy, there are a few moths possibly at it, I shall look it up. :)

I think the photo is deceptive as the other half of the creature was still in the carrot.  Thanks for all your help!  I've parsley and parsnips growing beside the carrots, I guess I'll have to wait to see what happens to them.
