Hi,

I need a rotovator to go over a large plot (35m x 18m).  I haven't been able to find anyone on the lotty who has one so I was wondering about hiring one.  Does anyone have any experience of this?  Will they deliver?  Is it worth it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The company I work for sometimes hires equipment if we don't own the machines ourselves. most hire companys will hire the kit, I'm not too sure whether they would deliver to an allotment or not, I suppose they would.
You can get small ones that will fit into the back of the average familly car, so maybe you could pick it up, or get someone to do it for you?
We haven't had any trouble hiring "stuff" from a company called Hss, I think they are nationwide.

The hire co near us will deliver to allotments for an extra £5 , they keep rabbiting on to me about their biggest being  hydraulic ?
Anyhow I'd hire the biggest you can to be honest.

I hired a Camon C8 recently from a local independent hire shop for £30 a day plus VAT (it was £45 + VAT for a weekend and £70 + VAT for the week!) This is a big one, too big for a car, and needs two people to lift it, I made a ramp and drove it up the ramp into a trailer.

I guess most places would deliver depending on distance but would charge.

Hi all,

I am thinking about renting a rotovator to save my back as we just started to dig our new garden.
I have the choice between a Honda 5hp and a Barreto 13hp.

I have 4 5m x 5m beds to dig,  there is lawn for the moment (apparently without weeds).

Do you think that the Honda would do the job or I should go for the big one?
Would it be preferable to remove the lawn first or it is fine to dig the lawn in?

I'll answer my question.
If like me you have a plot that has not been worked before and that has lawn on it, it is better to rent "the big one", I don't know if I have been fulled by the renting guy or not but he seemed like an honest man.
I will confirm after this week end when I'll have rotovated.

Is the barreto the one with the hydrostatic drive?
If it is, it's a fantastic bit of kit, and so simple to use.

It is adverted as hydrolic rotovator.
I believe that we are talking about the same: a bigger than normal rotovator with 2 big wheels and the blades at the back.

Indeed this rotovator is a fantastic bit of kit. Very heavy, very durable and very powerful.
The ground was a bit wet and it did the job quite easily mixing the lawn and the soil.

I would recommand this engine (even if a bit expensive) to anyone that has to dig is beds for the first time.
