Dellorto carburettor
« on: September 26, 2006, 17:03 »
Hi,

I have just acquired a Merry Tiller rotovator which has had a new engine fitted at some time. The engine starts ok but needs no choke at all, in fact it will not run with choke applied. The mixture screw doesn't seem to do anything so I expect there must be a problem in that area. The carburettor is a Dellorto and I haven't been able to find any information about it on the internet so far.

Is anyone familiar with this model? I would really appreciate some help.

John

can you give me more information? delorto carbs are often fitted to different makes of engine ie briggs and stratton or tecumseh. You say the engine starts, so what do you think its not doing right?. the screw adjustment on the side of the carb is for slow running ( idle speed) and wont make much difference at high engine speeds. some of the early delorto`s had a screw adjustment on the bottom of  the carb for high speed adjustment, later models are fixed jet so you cant adjust them. does the engine "hunt"? it could be that this stops under load, if not i would expect that there is a small amount of dirt in the fixed jet. i might very well be able to give you a diagram of your carb if you can give me more details of the engine its fitted to.
all the best,
graham :D

Hi Graham, thanks for replying. When I took the spark plug out it was black and I assumed this meant the engine was running rich. I haven't been able to test the machine under load as I am still in the process of making new clutch parts and generally putting everything in working order, so I don't know if it stops under load. The engine has a plate which says 'Tecumseh Licensee' but Tecumseh say they don't recognise the model. If it will help, I'll let you have the info on the plate. The carburettor is marked 'Dellorto FHC 20' and '8118015 D2'

it sounds as if there isnt much wrong with the engine/carb. if it were me i would leave it alone untill the rest of the work has been done. in the meantime i will see if i can get some diagrams together for you.

can you post me a pic of this carb? most dellortto
carbs are used on motorcycles and mopeds by companies
such as jaguar, bmw, and many other british bikes, and
many moped brands. most do not have mixture screws,
only an idle speed screw. a company called anr trading
imports these carbs to the U.S. i've never seen one on
a tec engine, so it is possible someone installed this
carb themselves. post a pic of the engine and i may be able to tell you which one it is regs karl
still alive /............

are you sure that is a tecumseh engine? if it is, it
is an old h40 or h50. the plastic cover on the oil
bath air filter puts it in, or around the time when
tecumseh bought clinton.  the metal fuel line looks
like what was used on the clinton engines. and the
clintons look nearly identical to a tecumseh, and a
lot of parts interchange. here is  a link for you to
the dellorto carb site. hope it helps out.

i am sure if you contact the technical dept they may give you a lot more information.regs karl  can i suggest you post the pictures on this  and my website using photobucket for any other folks to offer advice on

No, it isn't a Tecumseh engine. The plate says 'Tecumseh Licensee', but Tecumseh don't recognise it. Thanks for your help, I will try the Dellorto link you mention.

then i would think its a clinton then , thats what happens when you get so many companies messing about with a basically great engine such as the B & S
