best red onions to beat white rot
« on: October 13, 2010, 11:13 »
ok, I know it's impossible to beat it, but I'd like to put up a good fight. going to plant them in the summer squash patch, which I don't think has had onions grown on it for a long time, and only plant red onions, as these seemed to withstand our rampant white rot this year better than the white onions did.

what red onions have others had success with in similar conditions? we like them for salads as well as cooking - perhaps I should try a couple of different varieties?

I hate seeing a post unanswered and dont know which is the best but think your idea of trialing a few types might be a good idea. Last year I lost about a fifth of my onions to white rot, it was my first year so I am growing in a different bed this year.
Good luck

I got very good results from a red onion called Red Baron last year,  I've got a bag of Electric Autumn sowing sets from a newspaper offer to go in soon and will try Red Baron again in 2011.  Cheers,   :D Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I've ordered electric autumn planting sets, and hyred and red emperor for spring. And some chesnok red garlic for autumn planting too. Must make extra effort to note how each performs and will report back next year!

I have Electric as well.

I think it's more down to crop rotation than type of onion. My beds go in four pairs, like this:

2 x Potatoes
2 x Beans
2 x micscellaneous (no onions, not even spring o's)
then a pair: 1 x brassica and 1 x all onions.

Each pair is moved around the plot each year, and at year four I switch the brassica/onion pair over so, if you think it through, any one bed is visited by onions every eight years which should be enough to give a long enough break between onions to prevent white rot.

I'll let you know in eight years! Five to go.
