Which fish food?
« on: May 29, 2010, 18:45 »
Hello all,

I have bought a fish tank and accessories for the tank today and am leaving the water to settle for a week before I buy the fish to go in it.
The tank is a 20 litre and has a filter and a light. I will have to buy coldwater fish.

I had a couple of goldfish 2 years ago, but have forgotten what I fed them.
I will probably buy a variety of fish and was wondering: what fish food would be the best for different sizes and varieties of coldwater fish?

If anyone can advise me on what the best food for them is, I will appreciate it  ;)

no idea why not ask at your local pet shop or the place where you get your fish from then you can get the same feed that they are on already - you never know they may even give you some  ;) .
The only fish I have had are ones that I either won at the fair or got of the rag and bone man (you are probably too young to know what one of these are). My sons did have a few gold fish type of things with long flowing tails but they were just fed on cheap flakes from places like Wilkinsons - nothing special.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I have been feeding  my pond goldfish the Wilkinsons pellets for years with no problems. I feed the hatchling goldfish in the 10L  tank the same pellets but crushed to a size to suit the fish.
I would think the flakes may be the better option for keeping a larger tank clean.

I've had a tank full of tropical fish for ....  must be 30 years.

Different types of fish need different types of food depending on their natural diet and the part of the tank they inhabit.  A 20 litre tank is very small so you must not put too many fish in it.  You must NOT over feed them either and if the tank doesn't have a filter they will need the water changed frequently but don't use fresh tap water.  You can buy a product to remove the chlorine from tap water.

Thanks Sally. I did say that the tank has a filter and I have already bought and put a couple of drops of bioactive tapsafe into the water.

i would imagine if they are coldwater fish you would just pop along to the nearest supermarket/wilkos/pet shop and get whatever fish food is on the shelf....just remember, they have different nutritional needs to rabbits and guinea pigs ;)

Hi prettychick.  Stock ratios for cold water tanks are smaller than for tropical tanks - about 1cm per 2L.

Therefore you should get a max of 10cm of fish in your 20L tank (when they are fully grown - you will probably buy them much smaller than adult size).

I'll take that into consideration :). Thanks Casey

Ask the people that you buy the fish from to sell you some suitable fish food too.

I've always used King British flakes for my gold fish, Snappy is now 16 years old so it's doing him alright!
