I don't have a greenhouse (yet! c'mon freecycle!) but I do have 2 of these. My neighbour had a normal growhouse and gave up on it part-way through summer - the frame's still up in the background.

Not that they will be up in winter, but they do come with snow poles, and also mesh doors so it's less like growing boil-inna-bag veggies in summer.

This one has 3 cherry toms, 7 chillies (4 are lemon drops, which are more triffid-like than I was expecting) and an aubergine stuffed in it.

I like the culticaves Surbie.
I think they would come in useful for me especially during the winter. I reckon they would fit my square beds pretty well as giant cloches.

They come with fitted groundsheets, so possibly not...

If you could find one economically enough, perchance via freegle or a well known auction website, I should just cut the bottom out, leaving about 2 inches around the edge, whats the worst that could happen? :)

I've seen that Photo before GA, and went on a Google for more ... and found almost nothing. I think they must have all but died out.  I agree, less air to heat, and plenty of retained heat from the ground. Not much cropping height though - Melons would be OK (although I think the Victorians used lean-too with a very long roof for those?

There ... different type of greenhouse for each crop, how about that for my dreams? :)

Dick Strawbridge built a similar one in his programme about sustainable living, can't think what the programme was called now, but it was built against a south facing wall, and he built a heat sink inside it.  It stayed lovely and warm all night!

And there was one in a garden on our way to Boston, but when the house was sold, I think the new people demolished it and filled the hole in!

I think the height in some of these greenhouses is the same as ours, but yes, they did have different hothouses and greenhouses for different crops didn't they?  More room and more money than us mere mortals!

At Chatsworth there is a small coal mine, and tracks for train trucks, that they used to fuel the boilers for their greenhouses back in Victorian times ... you've just need to think on the right scale Grannie Annie  :tongue2:

Our blank canvas...I'm a bit daunted by the prospect TBH.
