Help needed identifying shrub
« on: June 08, 2014, 17:14 »
Hi. I have a shrub in my garden that has just come into flower. It is somewhat overgrown as I didn't get round to pruning it in winter. I would like to know what it is as the bees absolutely love it. There must be at least 30 bees on it at any one time. It is lovely to see as there is quite a few different types of bee.

We are looking to move house soon and would like this shrub in the new garden but will need to buy another as this is too big to move.

it looks like a Weigela to me. I have a variegated variety in my garden - but there are quite a few varieties. You can easily take cuttings to make a new specimen. Have a wee G**gle for Weigela and see if you can find similar.
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

If it's an evergreen it's an Escallonia - Weigela are deciduous  ;)

RHS advice for taking cuttings are here, escallonias root quite easily  ;)

Looking at the formation of the lower growth, I'd agree with Escallonia.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
