My dad really wants a rhubarb patch on the new allotment.

At the end of one of the unused allotments is  fantastic patch of it, which we have been told we can use to start off a new patch.

Can anyone please tell me how and when we do this.

Thanks.
I always find that work gets in the way of life.

Lift it in November and split it with a spade, they are extremely hardy plants.

I fancy growing it too, but never having grown it before I was looking for a plant rather than seeds to start with, except no where has any   am I looking at the wrong time :?

BC it's a bit early for rhubarb plants to be in the garden centre's, they are greedy feeders so dig in plenty of manure when you prepare the bed. See if you can scrounge a root off fellow plot holders ( if your on a lottie site ).

Here`s our rhubarb grown from/in the back garden, harvested yesturday eaten bout 2hrs ago lol.:

One tip i can give ya is cut the rhubarb when it`s grown full size /thick like in me pic cut it towards the just about half an inch off the dirt/soil leave the seed/roots in don`t pull the rhubarb out as it`ll just keep growing yr after yr.

Another question I have a compost bin that cuts the bed in half in one half we have stuff and in the other end we want to place a rhubarb but will it not like being that close to the compost bin :?

I am growing it in my garden as I dont have a plot yet (my other half says I lost it years ago )

I was taught to pull the stalks from the plant base not cut the stalks off the plant, as disease can enter the root through cuts .

We are looking for a cheap source of Rhubarb crowns, we are about to plant 2 rows ,with about 2-3 ft spacings ,there'll be about 30 plants in each row.

With the concern about manure at the moment, we will use compost and chicken manure in the planting holes .

you shouldn't really pick rhubarb after june, july at the latest. i think its because the remaining stalks feed the plant ready for next year

Yes they are but not to the extent of making you ill from just touching them just wash your hands after. I think it takes about 14 rhubarb  leaves to make you sick after eating them. Don't try this at home
