Lincolnshire Plum Bread
« on: November 03, 2013, 13:39 »
I like to collect/make traditional English/Scottish/Irish/Welsh recipes.

Now on a trip to Lincolnshire, I saw Plum Bread.

I have searched on line & the recipes vary somewhat.

The older one's seem to suggest a more cake like recipe, SR flour, mixed fruit etc & some suggest  bread flour & yeast. Except one particular recipe in a well known paper recommends a recipe with yeast, pity how much yeast is not in the list of ingredients.

So does anyone know what recipe it most true to the traditional & possibly recommend a recipe too ?

The shops around here that make Lincolnshire Plum Bread, make it as a bread rather than a cake.  It is traditionally made for Christmas, but the shops sell it all the year round now.

Here is one recipe, courtesy of Karen Burns-Booth who I am sure won't mind me putting the link to her recipe on here!

Flour and yeast are more historical than self raising flour  ;)

I did think the yeast type would be more traditional.

The SR Flour types seem more like tea bread recipes.

But while the 2 given recipes are similar & use yeast, only MOS's recipe has tea in it, not grannies. So which is more traditional ?

I guess if it's really "old food", then tea would have been too expensive for most & thus Grannies would be more traditional.

I just don't need 4 loaves !

From what I saw of the the plum bread yesterday, tea did not look like it was included.
