Need advice on a broodie
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:05 »
What type of hen makes a good broodie?  and at what age? ??? as it will not be a silkie ??? my  husband calls them(Spanish) diablo pollo=Devil Chicken  so i would prefer a Large fowl as you can get a few more eggs under them :D as i think it would be enjoyable to see a hen with her babies  rather than using an incy  ::) plus i could have more eggs going that way :D hubby will just roll his eyes  to this but wont say no as he loves me. :nowink:

There's a good chance more than half will be cockerals, have you thought what you will do with them? Other than silkies I can't help on other breeds that go broody.

oh yeah even if half will be cockerels they will have a home  or fatten up for a food pot breeding and hatching is not new to me and dispatching it's just looking for a broodie as not done that before as all my hens are egg layers not the broodie type or i would not be asking this question.

Brahmas, cochins, wyandottes all make excellent mothers, brahmas and cochins are notorious for their broodiness, and they make excellent mothers (you can also fit a nice 9 or 11 eggs under one ;) )  Wyandottes also make excellent mothers, but are not quite so broody as the other two.

All three make very good garden ornaments too - but not so much as egg layers!

Silkie cross Light Sussex make good broodies and would be bigger than a silkie pure bred. The crosses are also known as clockers. :)
