Medlar advice
« on: November 08, 2020, 15:42 »
Hi,
Just wondering how large the fruit are as mine are only 3 - 4 cm diameter so not sure if they are worth letting them rot to see what they taste like. Is it worth it? Do you need to let them rot before making jelly / chutney not that I have loads, thanks 🐱

That seems about the right size. You definitely need to let them rot before using them or they will be quite unpleasant. Google ‘bletting’ to get an idea of what to expect.

Yes that’s the right size

I put mine in the freezer for a few days and then defrosted them before making jelly

Hi,
Unexpected, guess that i should give them a go as it is a mature tree, has mistletoe growing on it too, but not much use for it this year , lol.

My tree is just starting to lose its leaves but the medlars are still firmly attached. I’ll be picking them in the next few days. I leave them in a bowl until they feel nicely squidgy when I poke them. Does putting them in the freezer affect the taste at all?
