Covering for Brassicas on windy site
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:26 »
My plot is exposed and gets a lot of wind. I covered some cauli's with fleece, but after a few weeks, the wind had wrecked it.  :(

Any ideas on what I could use to cover my Brassicas - or any ideas on how I could make fleece last longer?  :?

Thanks

FatGaz - my plot has been suffering in the wind too. For my brassicas, I've surrounded them with canes topped with 'funballs' from Asda Living (£4 for 100 balls). Cut a slit in the ball and pop it onto the cane. Slide the fleece over the cans and secure with old bricks/tiles left lying on my plot. No holes in the fleece and sprouts and cauli doing okay underneath.

We found environmesh is really strong and withstands wind well, still needs to be secured though , we use canes and bricks or other heavy objects such as plastic bottles filled with water /bags of sand .We make a tunnel  tall enough for the growing plants , supports can be canes with balls on top and string between to stop sagging .

Environmesh keeps out insects, birds and rabbits ,lets in light and water.

It's called debris netting, really, really strong. Very fine mesh, stitched at the edges, with eyelets for pegging down. Lot cheaper than enviromesh, but too heavy just to lay on plants.

Has cropped up in a couple orf recent threads.....
