killing grass and weeds in vegie patch
« on: October 23, 2007, 15:13 »
I have just been on holidays and have come home to my veggie garden which has taken off unfortunately so have the weeds.  I have a thick layer of mulch and raised beds but the weeds just keep coming no matter how much I pull them out - any suggetions on how to kill this off once and for all?  My main problem is with grass - I think its couch

Put that in your Profile please so that we all know for future.  No, RoundUp is not organic and it would also kill all the veg in your veg patch.

Hand weeding and/or mulch and/or flame-gun would seem to be your choices.  Don't start any bush fires though!

Hello, I'm responding as a fellow newbie (one year coming up).  You will find that on this forum Munty will advocate full scale chemical warfare with all unwanted plants but we're not all like that.

I've made the mistake of procrastinating over the year on which method to use having started off with a pure organic mate, who has since left, I'm more inclined to go the chemical route simply because unless you know exactly what you're doing (i.e. identifying weeds, knowing not to dig them in, etc) manually weeding will be very hard indeed if the plot's been neglected.

I spoke to someone the other day who told me that another plotholder had his 72 year old disabled grandad sitting on the ground manually weeding through each square yard of soil for months.

We all do things in different ways, but I thought I ought to chip in as a newbie so you can learn from my mistakes!

Best of luck anyway :)

I think it's fair to say the our beloved Munty will wage full scale chemical warfare on anything that gets in his way, plants and people but he does know his stuff and his way is quicker if you can bring yourself to do it.

Reasonably organic but totally realistic

Thanks for the replies guys - I'm gonna keep going with the manual weeding for a while - Every time I want a smoke I go out into the garden and pull weed while I do it - achieving two things in one I smoke less whilst weeding and am slowly chipping away at the weeds. All good I suppose

It's OK Munty, he may be doing it organically but he's having a fag at the same time.  Not entirely chemical free, don't worry!

and the organic thing I am trying  to clean up the whole family and I am trying to quit  -  thats what I was saying the more weeding the less smoking -

we can't all be perfect we can just try!

I do appreciate all input to my questions even if I don't use it it does give me options

Weeding instead of smoking is a good start.

Just don't start smoking them afterwards.

So manually weeding could be a bit like knitting when you're giving up smoking - keeps your hands busy.  Let's hope she'll soon be going out to do the weeding without the smoking! :)

I cleared my plot of weeds at least 10 times and now it is back to mountain again, couch grass everywhere. Im going with round up and the laying raised beds with polythehe over the paths and newspaper in the bottom of the beds and soil on top of that. Either that or im going to jack it. its a 24/7 effort otherwise. AND at the moment LIDL is selling 2 little gem lettuce for 24p.

And you get hundreds of seeds for 24 p and honestly, only the first few years are like that, keep your chin up, mate and get a good hoe, or make it two.
