Garden blowers/vacuums
« on: September 28, 2009, 19:09 »
After the debacle of last autumn, this year I am going to treat myself to a garden blower/vac.

I'm not looking for anything too expensive, though the vac would have to be able to handle acorns and not just leaves.

Since I'm completely naïve about garden equipment would this work?

Oh well... will probably have to resort to raking the acorns.  It's been a bumper year for them this year *woe is me* *violins playing* etc lol

get one with a metal cutting blade attached in front of the plastic blower blade, mcculloch do a petrol version, i use a stihl, but i garden for a living so need one that is reliable and can be repaired, mine will handle acorns with ease.
most petrol vacuum will have a metal cutter, cheaper electric are not powerful enough.

Don't you mow Casey ?  I find leaf/grass mix in Autumn makes excellent compost.

Gardeners World (or similar) showed the presenter using a rotary mower being used as an alternative to a shredder by running it over the debris on the ground.  I find this works pretty well and is also very good at sucking up leaves etc and depositing them securely in the bag.  I do have a B&D Garden Vacuum but find it very combersome to use, gets blocked with little twigs frequently and does not really work unless everything is completely dry - a good rotary mower is much better all round.
