Uses for top soil
« on: March 30, 2009, 11:04 »
I've got a large pile of spare top soil - can anyone suggest any uses for it? Can it be used to fill containers or am I best to stick to compost for this? Seems a shame to waste it, but my beds are all full!

These days top soil isn't particularly nutritious for plants, but is definitely a good mix with compost for pots....or friends in need of soil.

Top soil is great for filling pots that are going to have permanent plantings (trees, shrubs and suchlike).  You will need to mix in some organic material (traditionally peat; leafmould, manure and compost acceptable alternatives), and fertilise as necessary throughout the season.  Just be aware that it's a lot heavier than compost, and fill large pots in their final placings (says the girl who was hauling an apricot in a 20" pot the other day - do as I say, not as I do ::) ).
