I really hope your tongue was firmly in your cheek when you made that suggestion, Andy
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I hired one from our local tool hire place last year, cost me £15 for the day including all the safety gear. I don't have any qualification in using a chainsaw and I wasn't asked for any. ( I also own a chainsaw but this was a tough job and I didn't want to wreck mine  :) )

I think the qualifications are only necessary if you're to be employed to use a chainsaw. I did by basic chainsaw through work years ago, must get it refreshed sometime...

That's reasonable aelf. My original plan would work then. :)

I would strongly urge you to ensure you have proper safety equipment too - leggings etc as well as eyewear protection.

When I did a gardening course several years ago now, we were shown some chainsaw trousers which someone had been wearing when they had an accident with the chainsaw.  The trousers were shredded half through, but had done their job.  Just think what would have happened if ordinary jeans had been worn instead.

It's one of the things which has stayed with me ...

I was told that a chainsaw is like a 'mountie' (Canadian mouted police) in the fact that they always 'get their man' and i bear that in mind whenever i use one.
I have seen a few scars from the pre chainsaw trouser days and they are not pretty.
Wear the safety gear and do not be distracted by anything !

I've seen this too, only the leg was cut too, needed stitches and lost a lot of blood.

Maybe it would be better to pay someone with the correct tool to cut the sleepers, especially if the tool wont be used again, and think of the energy you would save and be able to channel somewhere else in the garden.  ;) :)
Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else.

I use a chainsaw most days through out the winter months and i have chainsaw trousers on every single time i use it, i have been tempted to use it on the odd occasion when i have not kitted out at the start of the day but never do. Even for one cut i will take the time to put on the trousers.

A good sharp hand saw will do the trick just take a while longer to get it done like others said get it at a nice height and cut away, i would not want one of my chains near a sleeper anyhow.
Thanks
Kris

Don't go near a chainsaw unless you have the right PPE, just one slip and even a small one can take your leg off.
