Title: Double yolkers
Post by: Pep on November 13, 2011, 20:32
Hi all,

My two girls have just started laying.

I've had six eggs in all; 1 soft shelled, 1 weak shelled and watery white, 1 small but 3, yes 3 double yolkers and large yolks at that.

Presumably the same hen is laying these doubles.  Do you think I can expect this to be a permanent thing or is it a starting blip?

hopefully it is just a blip and things will settle down as double yolkers aren't good for hens - they usually are larger (so could be a cause of becomming egg bound) and it uses up all her supply of eggs  :(

Oh :(.  Here's me thinking that I was onto a good thing.  Oh well, what will be will be as I can't do anything about it.  Thanks for the advice though Joyfull as I'll know why if she stops producing early.

all hens are hatched with all the eggs they will ever lay. They are on what looks like a  ribbon and as they travel along they then get bigger and get their shells but once they are gone then that is it I'm afraid.
