OK to use seeds from last years squash?
« on: January 13, 2011, 17:40 »
I had a good crop last year from three Crown Prince squash, which I grew alongside some butternut squash.

If I use the seeds from the Crown Prince, am I in danger of getting Butterprince or Crown Butternut mixes? I scooped the seeds out of one yesterday and they look too good to throw away.

Ta.

As regulars on here will testify, there is quite a risk.

My pumpkin/marrow cross is legendary.

I won't re-post the picture yet again, but here's a link:

Read the seed saving guide at the bottom of this page at Real Seeds:

http://www.realseeds.co.uk/wintersquash.html

If you have enough room you could try yours and see what happens, but if your space is at a premium I would get new seeds this year and make sure you save some properly for next year.

Crown Prince is an F1 variety and would not come true from seed in any case.

This season I intend to grow Butternut Squash, Crown Prince and Jack of all Trade Pumpkins on the same bed, or at least quite close to each other. Ids this okay?

As long as you don't save the seed. The fruit this year is unaffected.

They'll be fine and the fruit will be lovely but don't save seed for next year as they will be crosspollinated, so you've no way of knowing what would grow

I agree with that bloke  ;)
