hi there, i am hoping someone will be able to give me some advice about my little maran bantie, i have noticed today that one of her eys is watering a lot with a bit of foam keeping on appearing in it, she keeps trying to wipe it off on her shoulder it appears a little bit swolen underneath - apart from that she seems okay, eating and foraging as usual although she might not be quite as lively as usual.  sjhould i try putting some antibacterial drops in it altho it is for humans? can anyone suggexst anything please?  many thanks, lou

I find the best treatment for watery eyes is cold tea, works wonders on any animals also humans, and doesn't cost a fortune.

Soak a teabag in hot water, no too much so it is quite strong, when cooled dab on with cotton wool in a few days 9 times out of 10 it has cleared up.

hanks michelle, i will try that - is it a common problem for hens to have watery eye?

If her eye is swollen underneath it may be her sinus is infected, this would indicate an upper respiratory infection, combined with the observation of not being quite as lively as usual. I would pop her to the vet and just ask for a course of  oral antibiotics, Baytril or Tylan will be fine.

Try the cold tea first for a few days before taking to the vets, much cheaper  and like I said most times it works.
