Planning ahead, can anyone tell me if the larva of Hoverflys who, I am told ,will make a meal of Greenflys do the same with the Blackflys on the Broad Beans.

If you look carefully in blackfly colonies you will often find the orange maggots of hoverflies. Quite nasty really. The lavae of lacewings and ladybirds also enjoy this nice juicy meal. The lavae of ladybirds eat more aphids than the adults. They are like grey woodlice with orange spots.

We grew orange flowers between our tomatoes last year to attract hoverflies.  Small  plants about eight inches high with fern like leaves with orange heads.  Like Marigolds but called something else.  Sounded like it began with an A or an E.  (I'm from Essex so it's difficult to tell!)

Can you tell that I don't really do flowers!

If flowering  Coriander works then I'd like to give that a go this year.

African marigold?

Fennel flowers are good attractors and obviously give you a crop as well. For all you save-your-own-seed-fans all umbellifer flowers like carrots and parsnips also act as good attractants

Your flowers sound like Tagetes. The smell keeps whitefly away in the greenhouse and I use one per tomato plant plus an extra one for my climing french beans which do well in the greenhouse too.  :)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I give hover flies the credit for me having barely any greenfly in the greenhouse at all last year. Whenever I had a small outbreak there's be the little hoverfly grubs amongst the greenfly filling their boots. Bless em.

Nothing really, except having a bit of a wild patch around the greenhouse, with flowers and stuff in it.
