The effects of washing up liquid on plants...
« on: April 27, 2012, 15:10 »
Before anyone panics - I'm not asking about using it as a fertiliser or a weedkiller or anything like that!

I've recently put my IBCs into position behind the shed. One of them had previously been used to transport washing up liquid. Seemingly Fairy by the empty bottles I found inside it.

There is a small amount left in the corners (for want of a better word), lets say the equivalent of a couple of stadard sized bottles as an estimate.

I've rinsed it out with some rain water as best as possible, but I think it will take a while to kill the foam. I'm working on the presumption that 1000 litres of water should provide sufficient dilution to make it ok for watering plants.

Does this seem sensible? I don't want to kill my plants or have a thousand litres of water to get rid of!

It sounds like you should be safe. But if in doubt, try a small test spot first on something you're indifferent to and wait a few days for any results. If the plant starts to struggle, then simply remember to add a bit of that water to your can and dilute further with plain water. No point wasting it, you just need to dilute it.

During very hot weather I,ve often put my left over washing up water onto my plants and none have ever come to any harm -  and according to my OH I'm a bit heavy handed with the 'fairy liquid' ???

It's very good at controlling aphids - I use diluted washing up liquid to keep my chillis free of them.
