Bleeding from eye
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:09 »
Arthur (don't ask!) our lemon sablepoot had a bit of a weepy eye yesterday and when I was letting the girls out this morning one of them pecked her in the eye.  Have just gone to check on them and the eye is very red and appears to be bleeding.  Any suggestions on what I should do.  Don't want to use violet spray on her eye but was thinking about saline or optrex.  Or should we take her to the vet?

I would go to a vets asap, Arthur will probably need a topical antibiotic or even anti bacterial cream. Keep Arthur warm and separate for now xx
Staffies are softer than you think.

Not good.  She's very poorly.  On antibiotics and keeping her away from others.  Fingers crossed she'll pull through as she's a real character

Thanks for the hug.  Sadly Arthur didn't make it.  Can't believe how fast she went downhil. Certainly true that they can hide illness well.

oh so sorry xx
Often the other hens will attack another one when they know they are ill and the ill one will often just take it until they pass away, sadly this is the law of the jungle, survival of the fittest and ill animal/bird will put the whole herd/flock at risk. But at least you gave her a fighting chance.
