Well the first egg has started wobbling so only a few more days to go!  Officailly due on Sat so will have to see if any decide to make an early appearence.

I'm getting quite excited now. Probably a good job I am at work or I would just be sat watching the incubator and with 4 days to go that could get a little tedious!!!

I'm resisting putting Bumble babies under Eve at the moment - it's ever so hard when she really wants to sit and I know that the duck eggs are all fertile!

Have a strong feeling that I'll be having ducklings before the weekend. There are quite a few that have already internally pipped and one had externally pipped!

It's a good job I'm a bit paranoid and have everything ready well in advance as they are not due for 4 days. Had hoped that this early hatching had been sorted when I recalibrated the temp on the incubator but obviously not. A couple look like they are not ready to hatch for a while but will Auvergne to wait and see ...

Ah, patience. Not my strongest point.

Well they're here!!!

So far 10 out ans fluffing up nicely. 3 more on their way out and 2 seemed to have died in shell a couple of days ago.

So far I have 7 black and white ones and 3 grey ones and think it will end up 9 to 4 in the end. Will post more pics as they fluff up. Here are the first 3 to fluff up although you can't really see the black and white one.

All I need to do now is hope for lots of girls.

I have just spent the best past of an hour trying to get a pic of my black and white cat on the black and white Jacob sheepskin with one of the black and white ducklings but the cat is too scared to go near the duckling.

Seriously.

He is the wettest cat in the world.

I mean they are 2 day old ducklings!

Post by: Caralou on April 26, 2010, 11:55
Poor Pudtat - these ducklings are terrifying things don't you know  ??? My cats hated Bumble & Bee as babies. I was scared they would try to eat them, but they wouldn't even come into the room if they were in it  ::) I accidentally locked Caesar in with the Poland chicks for a day and came back from work to find him sat in the corner just staring at the uncovered brooder box! All chicks were fine but he belted out of the house as soon as the door was open! They seem to know they aren't allowed to eat the fluffy ones in the house or my garden,  but any other bird is fair game to them.

Need lots more photos now  ;)

Ok, ok!!

I'm just a bit slow as only have my mobile but here they are enjoying their first taste of the outdoors. Amazing how quickly they settled into foraging for bits of whatever in the grass.

Title: Re: Patrick Babies on the way! They're here!!!
Post by: Kate and her Ducks on April 26, 2010, 21:08
They are fab. They do grow like weeds though. I swear they have doubled in size since they first hatched! They will have to move into the larger brooder by the end of this week and then no doubt end up in the kitchen for a while. Keeping my fingers crossed for lots of good weather so they can get out soon.

Having the bathroom gutted could not have come at a worse time! Poor mites don't even have anywhere to go for a swim. My Mum already dispairs that after procrastinating for ages, the first people to use my new bath will be the ducks!!! At least I won't have to be ashamed of the pics of them in the bath.

Please forgive a plebian question -- what do you do with them all?
Title: Re: Patrick Babies on the way! They're here!!!
Post by: Kate and her Ducks on April 26, 2010, 22:23
Most of the girls had homes to goto before they were laid and the remaining 1 will stay with me. Don't like to hatch any unless there is a plan for where they go.

As with most poultry the boys are the problem. Some may be rehomed (there is one really lovely one I would be very sad not to be able to rehome) but any I can't will have to be for the table. Indont have the room either in terms of physical space or the number of girls to keep the ratio comfortable to keep them all. I hate killing them but love roast duck and this way I know that what I eat has had a safe, free, happy existance up until that point.

Title: Re: Patrick Babies on the way! They're here!!!
Post by: Kate and her Ducks on May 11, 2010, 22:42
Well they are growing like weeds and have completely outgrown their little rabbit cage and are now in the kitchen. Always makes life a bit more difficult when you have ducklings about your feet pulling at your trousers while you try and make a cuppa but it won't be for long.

Bother. Having lots of problems loading more pics but will keep trying.

Yay  :D So cute! I can't wait to bring home Patrick babas - although they wont be getting my kitchen as it is all in one with the living room and carpeted (think of the mess!!!)  They will have the little indoor cage for night that the boys had and then the bath and a little indoor run until they are big enough to meet the other boys and girls outside. I candled the eggs under Eve and think 2 may be viable, but they are dubious so if they don't hatch next week she may get very big babies to see if that will make her happy  ;) Last year she decided to mother 8 week old chicks so you never know....

Well Em came and picked up her Patrick Babies today and it was lovely to meet her and Dean. Unfortunately Cara is having Kitty Crises and couldn't make it but hopefully be along another day (sure she will be able to pick you up on the way, Hayley ;-)).

OH lit the BBQ (so he is happy) an wondered at the fact that 2 ducklings could be exchanged for 4 bags of well rotted horse manure and some meal worms and everyone was pleased with the arrangement! He's new to all this ducky business!

Thrilled to know that another two Patrick babies have gone to such a wonderful home and at least this way you will all get loads more pics as I know I'm hopeless!

We are home, we all travelled very well we stopped a few times to feed and water the babies. so it took us about 5 hours to get home. Were all a bit tired but very happy. The girls are settling in and having a bit of a nap, they are so friendly its amazing. I think and hope they like me already I was talking to them all the wat home and they were cheeping back.

Sorry guys but pics will have to be tomorrow. I think they need a bit of a rest tonight.

Thank you again Kate we had a fab day it was nice to meet you and the OH and all your gorgeous ducks, Dean was very taken with your welsh Harlequins. Watch this space. A better update tomorrow and pics I promise.

I think Kate gave me the naughtiest two they were nibbling my fingers through the cat cage all the way home. They are all gorgeous. Kate had to choose for me as I just couldnt they were all so pretty and the baby quails, well thats another matter there like little bees on motorbikes, so fast and so small.

hi there sorry to interupt and congratulations on your ducklings. my duckling hasnt long hatched and other one on way. how old do they have to be before you sex them and how do you sex them? thanks
Title: Re: Patrick Babies on the way! They're here!!!
Post by: Kate and her Ducks on May 16, 2010, 11:00
It is possible to vent sex them at a couple of days old but this is really a skill you need to be taught by someone who knows what they are doing. You can cause injury if not done correctly.

By 6 to 8 weeks old they will develop their quack (although one or two of mine have started making the occasional quack already at 3 weeks old). Girls have the normal quack. Boys sound like they have a sore throat.

By abou 18 weeks they will moult into their nuptial plummage and depending on their breed some can be told apart by that. In all mallard decent ducks the boys also have a sex feather on their tail (curly feathers on their tail) but by this time it is usually easy to tell them apart by their voice.

Title: Re: Patrick Babies on the way! They're here!!!

Girlies  :D :D :D

When I was given B&B we didn't know what sex they would be as they were so tiny, but by the time it was clear they were both boys I loved them too much to swap them for girlies  They are the most lovely little boys though, I think hand rearing makes all the difference as they interact so well and have none of the skitty behaviour of my girls.

It will be nice to have girls that don't run away from me and who are like the boys and want a cuddle and fuss each day

Hopefully next year we will have Patrick's daughter and Bumble babies (Bee doesn't mate with the girls, he just cuddles up to them  ::) ). I'm only a couple of days from seeing if this years hatch of Bumble babas is going to happen (on candling it didn't look hopeful) as they are due 22nd  :D Good thing is that if the hatch doesn't happen I can try to convince Eve she hatched very big ducklings out with Patrick babies

I think Bumble and Patrick daughter babies would be ever so cute

I'm back home and first thing was to let the new ducklings have a little bath after their warm car journey. The little black girl is Daisy Duck and the little grey girl is Holly Hooligan  :D The two of them played with the bath plug for ages before unplugging it and then looked most upset that the water disappeared  ::) Holly Hooligan has lived up to her name already by hissing at Shia Puss who legged it out of the cat flap in fear of the monsters in her bath  It is lovely having Patrick babies to go with Bumble babies

Yeah more patrick babies out into the world. There lovely Cara and if they are anything like mine they are very mischevous. They were in the garden today playing and I went in to get a drink turned round and they were behind me standing in the living room.

We ushered them out and were then lughing like mad.

Have fun with your new ducky family.

Daisy & Holly are now out with the big boys and girls in the run for the day (a little coop inside for a week then out to the coop in the shed to harden them after that). They got first swim in the pool and first feed which the boys were most upset about  ::) Little Holly Hooligan decided to hiss and run at Bumble, she won't be doing that again!!! Bumble pinned her, had a good quack at her and then she ran and hid behind my Cayuga Topaz and since then there has been peace in the pen  :D It is lovely when I walk up to the run though as I now have B&B run up to me and these two little terrors (my girls are antisocial so-and-so's!). Typically the ducklings were eating the layers pellets and the ducks the chick crumb though

Well, its official....i love my ducks!!!! Thankyou so much Kate, they really are fab It was great to meet you , Cara and Nick yesterday.Im working on putting photos up, but am charging my camera, and its soo hard to get a photo where at least 3 arnt blurred, they are like whippets. It was so funny this morning. Jess had her duckling 'Dave' sitting on her knee, i was talking to Kate on the phone telling her how lovely they were then someone knocked on the door- the dog barked, the duck jumped then immediatly pooped, all over Jessies legs...it was everywhere ....poor kate must have wondered what on earth was going on.....never a dull moment i tell you.
The chickens are not bothered, the ducklings tok themselfs in the run when we were in and out cleaning etc. The only time the chickens have shown any intrest is when the ducks get into the little pool, they all crowded around as if to say your supposed to drink it ??? Anyway, so far so good. the ducklings seem settled, the chickens arnt bothered, the turkey is showing off, but all is calm.....photos to follow

I thought you said you had no grass! Looks like loads there keep them happy.  :D Glad you are all settling in together. Mine don't seem quite as brave about going for the big ducks now there is only 4 of them so all is calm here. Mine also coped with their first night outside, in the broody coop so I have my kitchen back as long as it doesn't turn cold!!!

Well the grass looks 'lusher' than it actually is. This is the patch of grass just outside the chicken run. Most of the time they will be in the run, where there is absolutely no grass....they will have access to this grass and the bit around the front, just not all the time :D

The girls have had a lovely day in the run with the big 'uns here  :D Well, the girls have had a lovely day, my boys are somewhat traumatised by them  After Bumble showed Holly who was boss this morning she obviously decided to get her own back while I was out as when I went down to them Holly & Daisy were in the run eating and playing in the water and all the other ducks were in the duck house refusing to come out  ::) On seeing me the boys came running to the gate. I think their faces in this pic says it all - Help! Let Us out!

They seem to have taken up residence by the food bowl - probably in an attempt to stop the big girls scoffing all of their chick crumb  ::)

OMG i love my ducks.. :D
Got up at stupid o'clock this morning , came down stairs and was greeted by 5 happy chappies cheeping and quacking. Around 6 i opened their cage (they sleep in my living room) and they kind of stepped/fell out on top of each other then all waddled in a straight line and waited by the back door for me to let them out to play...so cute...oh everyone should have a duck (or 5)

Well its Kates fault Nicky...she didnt train them to stay still and smile for the camera. Every time i try and get them there is at least one that is blurred. They are funny little things.....i was just saying to Cara last night how lazy chilled they were, but as soon as you get the camera out, WHOOSH, they're gone! :tongue2: s at the moment you will just have to take my word for it...they are the most beautiful ducklings that the world has ever seen :D

Naughty!!!!

Daisy loves to hide behind the duck house so that I think she has gone missing and Holly is still a terror and runs at the boys terrifying them  ::) They are sooooo pretty, proper adult feathers are coming through and both are quacking now as much as cheeping.

I showed them Bumble babas yesterday and they were really good with them - when the little ducklings cheeped they came running to check they were okay

I love them to bits  :D

I know what you mean these little patrick babies are very naughty. I caught Sarah trying to get into the raised veg bed today dragging herself up by holding onto a spinach leaf. I didnt know whether to laugh or tell her off so I just broke it off and gave it to her.

I love it when they do that tearing around mad bit makes me laugh every time.

Mine are gorgeous as well and I love my patrick babies i feel very honoured to have them. they are just SOOOOOOOOOOOOO pretty.
