Can you identify this bug?

I found this buried when digging.  It seems pretty dead, but then I may have given it a clonk without knowing it with my trowel  ::)  Any ideas allot-mentors ?  It would be about 1 1/2" if straightened out.

Looks like a stag beetle larvae.  I think someone posted a similar picture very recently!

I googled and I think you're right! However it says they are protected... oops,  May have to 'lose' this thread   :wub:

hi it looks like a chafer grub stag beetle larve have a orangy red head and live in wood [sawn silverbirch up in last month 30 larve in it ] now prohibeted to move till fully mature beattles appear maybe 5years jezza
