Rent rise on Council site
« on: October 17, 2008, 16:37 »
Just had our bill for next year from our local Council and they have put the rent up from £24 to £34 for a half plot. I don't know what percentage rise this is but its a lot more than the RPI.

Two questions.......

What percentage rise is this? Never much good at Maths

What can I do? who should I contact to complain? is there any sort of law limiting the rise a council charges?
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

1 - Just over 14%

2 - Probably not a lot, they'll no doubt claim it's not gone up for years!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Are you sure?
10% of £24 is £2.40 but our rent has gone up by £10. From £24 to £34

What facilities do you have for that price????

Mine is £12 but there are no facilities at all - I still love it though!

As for the rise, 41% in a year is ridiculous but I guess if you refuse to pay it there is a long waiting list of people who would be prepared to do so.  Guess this is one of the negatives of growing vegetables increasing in popularity.

Now its established its 42% it does seem a bit ott.
If you are sure that last years figure is right its got to be worth an ask.
There must be a number on the invoice is it private or council.
Mine has gone down [age related,he he]
Have you spoke to other plot holders or your committe.

600 sq mtr plot, secure steel fencing around 78 allotment site and a water tap in every plot, oh yeah, and a babbling brook at the bottom of my allotment - ok so it's a tiny stream, but babbling brook sound so much nicer  :D

As your plot is 600 sq mtr, that's a very large area for an allotment site.

On our council sites, there aren't any plots that size.  If you had that much under cultivation it would be two full size plots, and  you would indeed be looking at about £90 full price rent for the two.  And having a tap on each plot and security fencing will not be cheap - and a bit of a luxury for some  :)

Edit: sorry, just realised I ended up commenting about someone else's plot, not the original topic

crikey!  I'd love to get £24 a year out of our tight lot - they nearly had a revolt last AGM when we put the rents up from £16 to £18 for non pensioners.  (consessions £2 off) but as for £34!!!

What I could do for the site if they paid that much..... sigh!!

And that's for a half plot!!

I have two plots for the grand sum of £20, and I'm pretty sure that's for both, not each. No facilities though, unless you count the rather seasonal stream. ;)

When we got our rent due letters in March, we were also told that the rent would be going up next year by about 5p extra per square metre (3p rent, plus 2p water charges).  I haven't done my sums properly, but at a guess for 500 square metres it will be an extra £25 on top of the £75 I pay already.  We were also told to let them know in writing by January 2009 if we intend keeping the plots as a result of the price hike.
