Tops of leeks
« on: September 08, 2023, 16:40 »
I have my leeks under a mesh to keep out pests but they top are now pressing again the top of protection. Would it hurt to trim the tops?

I'd let them be, Anton, because you'll be opening up the fibres to even more issues, some of which might not help the little darlings!

Can you just loosen the mesh a little? You won't be using the top leaves anyway, so if they get a bit squashed, they won't really mind; it's the bit below ground which is important!

Hactually Mr G, I use the lower part of the above ground stem as well as the blanched beneath ground stem as it cooks just as well. I do have to de-leaf as I go but hey!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hactually Mrs GG, I re-read my bit and really meant that the extreme tops were not worth using, and like you, I use the unblanched three or four inches above the soil, as the colour helps a lot of white sauce dishes and soups well, but you already know that...

So Anton, read my post to mean that the bendy stuff right at the top, which is open to the elements, won't get used, and can be clobbered, but as Mrs GG says, the insides of the bit between the wings and the ground above ground is just fine!

Phew, I'm glad we sorted that one out!
