green manure....

after reading some of johns book i wondered if when growing the green manure (mustard or beans/peas - cant remember which) if you are ok to harvest it or is the whole plant meant to be dug in?

Last year I grew field beans. The bees like the flowers so much I let them grown on so when it came to dig in I cut the tops off, composted them and dug the roots in.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
