Whatever you buy chose a thornless variety!
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Blackberries are canes.  Blackcurrants are bushes.

As suits you!  You will have to wait until the autumn anyway.  Any stock that is available at the moment will have been hanging around for a long time and may not do too well.

I'd be tempted, at this time of year, to get one from a garden centre so I can see what condition it's in. A spring purchase could come from either source as both would be in good condition.

Just be aware that the plant will eventually need a bit of space to each side to spread its canes and can get quite tall so hopefully you have a spot that won't overlook other plants needing sun. And definitely choose thornless.

I picked up two beautiful blackberries at 75% off just last week. Both were in 10" pots and one had a couple of flowers too.

They will be going down to the plot just as soon as I've prepared a spot for them.  :)

Try a nursery, they are usually loads cheaper than a garden centre :D

But keep an eye out at garden centres for clearance sales.... that's where my two came from. Posh plants!  ;)
