Just looked at the website for a local amateur weather recorder - he has Sunshine Hours recorded on his site.  Local to me, so may not be representative of the rest of the country:

A kilowatt hour is a unit of energy equivalent to 1000 watts being consumed (or produced!) for 1 hour.

Doesn't make any difference whether this is used to produce heat, light or mechanical energy, the appliance has still used 1 kwH.

Thanks Jay.

Being flippant

Do you think someone has informed the sun that the EU regulations now require low energy light

Perhaps its because of the solar cycle- we're nearing the end of one, with low solar activity and it's due to increase over the next two years.
Was watching this lady talking about it on tv a couple of weeks ago, just before we had that huge coronal mass ejection that caused the big northern lights display way up Norf' last week:

We're not actually approaching the end of one, the current solar cycle (24) started over 3 years ago, albeit slowly.

The solar cycle has nothing really to do with light intensity, but nasties such as Gamma radiation, which fortunately our atmosphere protects us from, but not communications satellites which can suffer.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well Dr Lucie Green gave the definite impression that we were entering a new period of higher solar activity and it would be particularly noticeable in 2-3 years.... regardless of the 'start' date of the cycle.
The Carrington Event which she talked about, (yes it's an extreme example) threw out so much energy that they were able to turn off the batteries on the Telegraph system and it still worked- there was that much energy produced...
My point is, given that the solar activity of Coronal Mass Ejections in recent years are at a low point, and they clearly produce energy, then it could effect the Kwh intake of a solar panel???

They produce Gamma radiation energy which is not of the type convertable by solar panels. That and the fact you don't want it to reach your solar panels, otherwise you'd be in for a frying!

They also produce electromagnetic radiation which will induce an electric current in miles and miles of wires, such as you describe with the Carrington Event.

I know that...   ::)
I'm talking about the electrical current they produce.

A simple to understand article for anyone who doesn't understand what on earth we're talking about LOL

Solar panels are designed to produce current from visible light, not the higher frequency radiation associated with a solar flare.
