Broad beans - too late or not to late?
« on: April 21, 2008, 13:20 »
Hi everyone,
Jsut started using this forum so forgive me if this information is elsewhere. I did a search first but couldn't find wnat I was after.

Anyway, Is it too late to start Broad beans off. I have found a spare piece of my garden plot (no lottie) and I wanted to use it for something.
If it's not too late then is there anything I can do in order to speed them up. Can I use manure now on them?

...or is it just too late for now

Thanks, any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You can certainly plant them now and you can speed them up by chitting them first in an ice cream tub on some wet kitchen towel.  When they begin to show signs of growth pot them up I use Richy's paper pots.  Grow them on until a couple of inches high.

Harden them off before you plant out.

I planted some less than two weeks ago and they have just sprouted, will be planting them next to the others that are a foot tall. They should provide a second crop for freezing.

Cool,

Thanks for the replies. I'll be off to get some seeds tomorrow morning. This gardening lark is great, you even get to eat ice cream all night, marvellous.  :D

Ps
Make sure you eat all the Ice cream first as it tends to look a rigth mess when your planting out

Hi all,

I've now chitted my broad beans, it's worked marvellously and they are now ready to go into pots, but is this shoot a root shoot or a plant shoot?

Should I pot them with the shoot pointing upwards or will it not matter (will they find their own way)?

Sorry about the daft question but it's the first time i've done it this way.

Nick

I'll be putting my second lot out shortly. Now I prefer haggaan das to tom and jerry so how easy is it to grow and how do you stop the ice cream from melting as you plant???
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!
