Caulieflower :- Optimum Harvest Time
« on: July 31, 2006, 23:29 »
Hello again,

Thought I would be clever this year and plant a few caulies under one of those enviromental sheets in the hope that I could stagger my harvest period.

Tonight I harvested a couple of decent Caulies from under the sheet and felt pretty pleased. I then decided to look at my main row and to my horror found another 12 out of 15 caulies ready to harvest. Suffice to say that I have carted home 7 and have folded the outside leaves over on the remainder.

My questions are
1) How long will they hold? (Its now gone cooler with rain tonight - West of Scotland).

2) From the 1st appearance of a tiny caulie, how long does it take to get the maximum size white caulieflower? My own eperience suggests its only a few days, but perhaps I was not paying enough attention.
Ah well ! There is always next year !

No curds on any off mine yet. Pal's had lovely curds, then she went back two days later and they'd bolted. Once they look good, I'd pick em rather than risk losing em.

Are they a bit green and look like little Christmas trees mum of 3?  That's Romanescu.  I love them.  they can grow quite big.  Someone gave me one to eat a couple of years ago, but when I tried to grow some last year, it was when I put them in too loosely, and they bolted and grew funny, but they are very nice

I really wasn't paying attention and just had my graffiti curd overnight seemingly   I cut it fairly early on because they can bolt eventually and I didn't think it was going to grow anymore width-wise. I still have some winter caulis(purple cape) waiting around to set curd.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

If you cut a cauliflower and wrap in clingfilm, store in the fridge it will hold for up to three weeks.
Cauliflower also freezes well.
They don't hold too well on the plant in the ground, I'm afraid.
