Any point keeping very late chillie plants?
« on: June 06, 2013, 20:22 »
I have about 6 very late chillie plants - only just got their first pair of true leaves and growing in module cells at present.

Is there any point growing these on to maybe overwinter for next year? I doubt they would mature and flower this year now, surely?

Or just compost them? I do have others in flower so I'm not losing anything.

they are certainly good for overwintering and i dont think you are too late for a crop this year even if it is a bit smaller. i have some backup sowings at about the same stage and fully kntend to grow themo on.

If the seedlings are new healthy upstarts, then fine, and a greenhouse border rather than a pot would be my choice. Plenty of time to get at least some fruit, and a possible advantageous over wintering if one chooses the potted path.
If they were sown some time ago and are sulking, I wouldn't bother.

Bright green and crisp, raring to go - promptly potted on tonight and we'll see how they do. Thanks for replies.

Whether or not you'll get a crop this year depends very much on the variety. Some crop a lot faster than others. But all of them will overwinter, so you'll always get a crop next year anyway, but whether or not it's worth doing that depends on whether they're a fast variety that'll crop in the same year.
