Long Red Florence
« on: September 08, 2012, 22:39 »
I tried growing some Long Red Florence onions for the first time this year, and they're pretty pathetic. They're right next to Bed Champs, Ailsa Craig and Silverskin that are fine, maybe a few more runts than last year but a very decent crop with some big bulbs. But the Florence have hardly swelled at all really. Are they normally a bit more tender and choosy about conditions than other varieties?

They don't grow into big onions, they look more like a banana shallot

I tried the long red florences last year and they were not great, but I hadnt noticed I had left a couple in the ground over winter and they grew on a bit more this year.

These ended up as very sweet shallots and very nice, but very slow growing!
But oh the flavour was good!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

 mine were only a little better than that, but made lovely 'spring onions'  ::)

I don't think they liked all the rain we had earlier this year  :(
I will still grow them next year though ;)

They are my favourite onion and taste sooooooo sweet. The tops are lush and long and you can stir fry those as they're too lush to waste. They don't like competition from other veg!  Grow them with space to breathe and where they will get plenty of sunshine (as if )  I had a bumper crop last year. I have harvested some this year but the crop is nothing like as prolific as last year but we are all in the lap of the Gods weather wise.  There's always next year  :)
