What are your recommended recepies/uses for sloes
« on: September 10, 2010, 10:14 »
We have found a sloe bush - well we hope it is anyway!!

We had hoped to make sloe Gin or Sloe Vodka but we assumed you would ferment the fruit to alcohol but the recepies Ive read indicate that you actually add the gin or vodka yourself.  We are trying to achieve an end product with very little outlay and buying the alcohol to end up just flavouring it seems a bit pointless?

I wondered has anyone used them for jam, or some sort of sauce or jelly for with meat?

Thanks

I only use them for two things , sloe gin and giving them to the unsuspecting to eat as in `ere try one of these little plums'. :)

Both well worth doing.

Only used them for Sloe gin and then chocolate afterwards. I suggest you try one and decide for yourself if you could make jam with them !!  :D

Sloe wine - 3lb of sloes, gallon of boiling water, 4lb of sugar, 1/2oz of yeast.

Put sloes in bucket or plastic container and pour over the boiling water. Cover and leave for 5 days stirring each day. Strain and return the juice to the bucket add the sugar and stir till dissolved then add yeast and leave for a week. After this put in a demi john with an airlock and leave to ferment.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it....

Thanks for the wine recepie, we will have a go at that one.  How long does it actually need to be left for fermenting do you know?

The recipe doesn't give a specific time, just until the bubbling stops through the airlock. Then filter, bottle and leave to mature for a few months. Not a quick process but they say it makes a nice full bodied wine.

I make hedgerow jam which includes about equal amounts of sloes, hips, haws and elder berris and or rowan berries which you cook and pass through a seive.
I leave mine on a low heat in the slow cooker.

Then add double quantity of above of apples, blackberies and plums(or damsons added at the earlier stage to be seived) cook then add equal weight of sugar. Boil until set is reached.

I'ts my favourite jam equal to damson.
