Hello does any one get know about gas boilers, a nee house that's been built behind ours has the gas boiler out let facing our house,the boiler starts up at 8am till 9am when it starts theres thick black smoke comes out for the first 5 minutes then it settles down to a grey smoke till it goes off is this right,   jezza

Black smoke sounds dodgy.  All I know is that son's replacement boiler had to be installed in his porch because of rules concerning the flue pipe.

I’d guess that the gas is not burning correctly and could be quite dangerous.

The emissions from gas boilers can contain carbon monoxide, so I don't know how close this is to your home, but it sounds as if it needs to be looked at for the sake of your health and your neighbour's.

If it was a diesel engine, I'd say the injectors needed adjusting.  But a gas boiler, that cannot be right. (Take a video of it).

Just a thought, but are you sure it's gas-fired, and not oil-fired, which could go some way to explaining?

Still doesn't sound too clever though. It might be worth ringing the gas board (if it is actually gas-fired) to vent you concerns; after all, it could potentially be a safety issue to more people than the owners.

Nothing normal about any sort of boiler emitting black smoke these days, unless it's a wood or coal burner being fired up.

Perhaps you need to ask your neighbours some more questions for safety's sake Jezza.

If it is a modern condensing combi-boiler, once it has started and if the weather is cool outside, you will see a lot of steam in the exhaust and this is actually normal. Modern boilers scavenge more of the heat from the exhaust and so the water vapour from burning the gas emerges as visible steam very quickly near the flue instead of dispersing.

Any oily smoke is definitely not usual and would warrant an urgent inspection.
