pecking order
« on: July 08, 2014, 09:18 »
Well, my two 18 week old Brahma's have been with the three sussex for two weeks now and the sussex still won't let them be anywhere near them. They peck and the Brahma's run for it.
I feed them with two feeding troughs and as soon as the sussex have finished they are over to clear the Brahma's away from theirs to finish the treats off.
I feel so sorry for them.  They are all roosting together now too. But the Brahma's go on the high perch away from the sussex and they don't come down till I have opened the hatch and the sussex have gone down the ramp and ion the garden.
Is this all normal or have I got a problem??
Can't see any boldness on the brahma's. The funny thing is they will be twice the size of the sussex when fully grown :)
Have a good day everyone

it is perfectly normal behaviour and will continue for a few weeks. Try not to interfere too much but provide several feeders, drinkers and also several hiding places for the brahmas (I use large branches to provide cover). Stay close by with wound powder and purple spray just in case.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thank you for your time and your answer to my questions. Do hope it all settles down soon.
Best wishes

Hi,
They have two feeders with their daily feed in and I feed them treats around 3pm each day. The treats are the problem.

When you come to feed the treats have they finished their daily feed? If so about what time do they finish it?  :)

Their daily feed is available at all times. The treats are given to them at three.

If it is the treats that are causing the problems, I would just drop them for a few weeks.  Hens don't need them and it will give your new girls a breathing space to adjust to life in their new home.

You will have to be prepared for a lot of complaining at 3.00 each day, but it will mean a lot less stress for the newbies.

Once they start laying, the pecking order switches around quite quickly, but bigger chickens are not always the ones in charge.  I had a little Serama girl, which are about the tiniest bantams going and she was a terror at times
