I'm just dosing my girls with verm-X (monthly like it says on the pack) and notice one chook jetting water out of her backside!!!    is that a normal side effect?  and do i need to withdraw eggs?
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

Not an expert, but occasionally when my hens are not laying they will sometimes poop out what I would consider to be the clear part of the egg and then do a more normal one!! :?

I've never used verm-x which is herbal (some herbal gut medications can be rather .....  severe

Is it only one hen who has reacted like this  you could try contacting the manufacturer

There's absolutely no reason to worm chickens on a monthly basis. When you cleanse the system so frequently, you are getting rid of good and essential things as well. If I knew that I was going to get a good purging every month, I'd be bricking it as well.

If its not broken why fix it ?

I do have to agree with you thi time Bodger

You have to assess the risks.

Many birds, intensivly farmed on the same land for years, particularly free range = high risk of worms

Few birds, clean land, even free range = low fisk of worms.

Having said that they can pick up gut worms from wild birds and gape worm from birds, worms, slugs and snails.  For the owner new to hen keeping it is a good idea to worm regularly (I recomend flubenvet every 6 months) but for an experienced keeper who is confident enough to spot the signs when worm burdens get too high, worming as and when symptoms may show is fine.

OK so i don't need to do it then.....  :?  I thought VermX was like a herbal preventative and gentle wormer - they make it sound like that on the pack!

Live and learn i suppose    Hope i haven't done them any harm! It was the first time i'd used it.

No one is saying you have done wrong.  And I would think the poo problem is something else.  People doo equate herbal with gentle but it is sometimes no the case.  Anyone who has had too much rhubarbs will agree.

I would continue to worm them as you are.  I'm 3 years up the hen keeping road and I can assess the health of my birds very accuratly and I've not bothered to worm them for about a year and they are fit al fleas, but I will know if they need worming and I'll use flubenvet.  You need to be confident that you are doing your best for them and you are !!!!

Good idea.  I'm sure it will settle down fine.  You could give her some bio yoghurt to replace the good bacteria that the squits may have removed
