Leggy brassicas, learning the hard way!!
« on: March 06, 2012, 13:27 »
I started off some cabbage, calabrese, broccoli and cauliflower in a propogator last week in the house and it's gone mental!!

Leggier than a leggy thing in a leggy contest!!

Needless to say they are all coming out later but could I grow them in the garage where it's colder and has limited light from the door glass?

Just to save DD the trouble saying it- brassicas dont need heat. In fact they hate it. I would be tempted to start again. A cold greenhouse might be better or just a cool windowsil without the propagator. I can see your problem with the garage - limited light would also lead them to going leggy.

They would be fine anywhere outside, and grow much stockier in good light and cool temperatures  :D :D

If the posh  frame thingy has no front it would be fine

Cool thanks I've put a white plastic backing on it now and the sides are cloaked in clear perspex leaving the front open  :D

What else could I put out on it now to start off ready for the plot?  I know bout onions but could leeks go on there too?

I have loads of seeds of varying sorts so any ideas?

Cheers

Yes, leeks could start there too.

Anything suitable for outdoor sowing in March would be OK, assuming you're not starting them off direct in the soil.  I plan to sow sweet peas and hardy annual flowers in the next week or two outside.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Just be sure to turn things so they don't lean towards the light... or of course you could try lining the back with foil (DD's suggestion extended   ) to reflect light from the other side as well.

Leeks would be fine.

I grow broad beans in pots and then plant them out at the plot when they are about two inches tall,  because last year the first two lots were eaten my mice. They would be great in your shelf unit, as would spring onions in modules, or lettuce.

Last year I grew some beetroot in modules and then planted them out when the roots started to show out of the bottom and they made great small beets in little bunches, forcinf each other apart as they grew (Round variety) Some would say it was a waste of time as you can direct sow, but it worked well for me  :D

Smashing thanks I'll get on it I thought the white plastic backing would reflect the light too saving turning them around?!

I would start again with the brassicas im afraid. Those plants of yours are indeed very leggy and not at all strong by the look of it. They will be used to the heat now and i reckon if you put them outside they will just be no good at all. Nothing ventured nothing gained though. Sow them in trays straight out in your grow frame and they will be MUCH better! :)
